(Re)inventing Reading

What it means to read, how we access, select and hold onto texts, and the strategies we use for constructing and sharing our making meaning have been dramatically impacted and enabled by newer literacies and technologies. Some of these shifts have quickly and immediately moved into our classrooms, and others require more examination and questioning - asking us to continually reexamine our pedagogies (and practices as readers) of texts that can be produced and consumed in an instant.

During the session, we will discuss ways of rethinking and “connecting” our readers workshops, cultivating digital libraries, leveraging e-readers and mobile tools, annotating and sharing print and digital texts, and evaluating multimodal tools which are changing how we teach and work alongside student readers. Emphasis will not be on tools but on the literacy practices that they open.

I teach within a BYOD (bring your own device) classroom, and all examples and tools will all come directly from my work with students. Where we will root/situate our work in the emerging literature in the field (i.e., new literacies theories, multimodality), the emphasis will be on the practical. Examples will include but not be limited to use of digital tools for textual annotation, methods for building readers communities within GoodReads and other online spaces, scaffolds for student creation of multimodal book trailers linked to QR codes and auroas placed on book spines, using multimodal tools for feedback and reflection, rethinking readers notebooks with evernote, and use of voicethread and other apps to support interactive readers’ portfolios.

Stories That Matter, Stories That Move: Using the Power of Storytelling to Foster Self-Directed Learners & Purposeful Journeys

For nearly two decades, twin brothers and co-founders of Boston-based media/interactive development firm FableVision Peter H. Reynolds and Paul A. Reynolds have created and shared stories that have helped inspire learning, creativity, and courage to lead self-directed, meaningful life journeys.  With books and films that have been celebrated around the globe, Peter landed the Association of American Publishers’ 2013 Visionary award for making such a "positive impact on the lives and endeavors of those throughout the learning resource community."

A Kid's Eye View - Student Documentaries

As our elementary students explore the world around them, they have a lot to say with distinct, refreshingly honest, and four-foot-high points of view. When our students become documentarians, they tell stories, create art to express non-fiction content, and make persuasive call-to-action films that set their powerful voices loose into the world. Happily, student documentaries also address a range of CCSS ELA Speaking/Listening and Writing standards while immersing students in the art of filmmaking.

In this session, I will share how my students go on powerful investigations behind the camera lens. In one student documentary, my students explore the range of reactions to a public art installation by sculptor Tom Otterness. In other, PSA-style documentaries, they craft powerful arguments to improve their community. I’ll share how I introduce documentary making to my students and the supports I provide (and often don’t provide). It just takes one smartphone, tablet, or camera and video-editing software to empower your students to create amazing documentaries YOU will be itching to show to the world.

Designing Online Learning

The proliferation of inexpensive or free “easy-to-use” online tools provide increased access for educators to develop online and blended courses and activities for students or other educators. Yet effective design for the online environment involves more than uploading content in an available online shell and educators have many questions as they get involved with designing online content. What’s different about online design? How do we adapt face-to-face content for effective delivery in an online or blended environment? How do we design online content so that it’s interactive and engaging? How is learning in the online environment assessed?  How do we keep the focus on the pedagogy and content and not the technology tools? 

This hands-on interactive session will address these questions and more through a discussion of key online course design principles, an exploration of an online course used to prepare educators to design their own online courses, and a review variety of example online courses and activities that illustrate effective online design.

Liberating Student Voice: Classical Strategies, Modern Tools, and the Art of Teaching Quality Writing
Milan Kundera famously said, "One morning (and it will be soon), when everyone wakes up as a writer, the age of universal deafness will have arrived."" Has that age arrived, when everyone is blogging, texting and tweeting, and some have stopped listening? Now, more than ever, as students are encouraged to ""find their voices"" as writers, teaching quality writing strategies is critical. Students need reasons to write, audiences to reach, and teachers to encourage them to take great risks as they negotiate the transition into serving as their own writing authorities.
In this session, two teachers, one from Washington D.C., the other from Zurich, Switzerland, will share their year-long collaboration experience focused on the art of teaching writing using modern tools. Their work is interdisciplinary and often experimental: students are encouraged to ""own their writing"", even self-assessing and critiquing each other. In this interactive session, Twitter, Skype, Instagram, Tumblr and other self-publishing platforms are used to explore the synergy between modern tools and ancient writing traditions. Both teachers encourage their students to foster an appreciation for classical authors and writing strategies by encouraging them to incorporate ancient rhetorical devices into their modern writing platforms.
This session is focused on the art of teaching writing to Middle and Upper School students.

About us: Daryl ""Gus"" Grissom, Ph.D., is a historian who has spent his career learning from ancient Greek authors, specifically Thucydides and Aristotle; Caitlin Krause, M.F.A., is an author, poet, and visual artist who focuses on timeless concepts such as mindfulness and empathy in her exploration of the craft of both interdisciplinary studies and teaching writing. A Kid's Eye View - Student Documentaries

As our elementary students explore the world around them, they have a lot to say with distinct, refreshingly honest, and four-foot-high points of view. When our students become documentarians, they tell stories, create art to express non-fiction content, and make persuasive call-to-action films that set their powerful voices loose into the world. Happily, student documentaries also address a range of CCSS ELA Speaking/Listening and Writing standards while immersing students in the art of filmmaking.

In this session, I will share how my students go on powerful investigations behind the camera lens. In one student documentary, my students explore the range of reactions to a public art installation by sculptor Tom Otterness. In other, PSA-style documentaries, they craft powerful arguments to improve their community. I’ll share how I introduce documentary making to my students and the supports I provide (and often don’t provide). It just takes one smartphone, tablet, or camera and video-editing software to empower your students to create amazing documentaries YOU will be itching to show to the world.

Digital Ethics or The End of the Age of Legends

We live in an age where everything is recorded digitally – in pictures, video, and text – live as it happens; it's the end of the age of legends. "Selfie", according to the Oxford dictionary, is the word of the year 2013. Often the selfies our students are sharing aren't putting their best digital foot forward. As teachers, how can we help our students leave digital footprints they can be proud of? Is only sharing your "best stuff" such a good idea? How do we address the issue of digital ethics across the curriculum and in our classrooms?

In this session we will share some practical suggestions for a digital ethics policy in your classroom, share resources you can use with your students to have meaningful conversations about making ethical and responsible choices online, and share concrete practical suggestions you can use in your class tomorrow to help your students create digital footprints that will pass The Grandparent Test (it's not what you think it is).

Mindfulness in the Classroom: Increase the 'Wow!' by Staying in the Now
During the 2013-2014 school year, Upper School and Middle School teaching colleagues at Zurich International School joined together in a groundbreaking program that focused on actively bringing Mindfulness techniques into the classroom. The course was led by Philippe Goldin, a research scientist in the Department of Psychology at Stanford University.
Mindfulness has powerful effects in any classroom, and serves to break down many barriers, allowing students to ""own their writing"" and take pride in celebrating their authentic voices, without fear or anxiety. They become more in-tune with their own senses, able to connect to the environment, describe their own feelings and emotions, and relate to others' experiences on a global scale.
Through incorporating Mindfulness exercises and writing strategies into class time with students, teachers can boost confidence and trust in a community of empathetic learners. Mindfulness involves being fully present, in the ""now"" moment, able to connect to the external world, while quieting the internal chatter that can stymie a learner's development and sense of freedom.
This hands-on session will focus on the many ways to incorporate Mindfulness into teaching practices, both in and out of the classroom. We will share active in-class techniques that apply Mindfulness to the practice of engaging students as empowered writers, learners, and global citizens.

Learner-Driven Curriculum - Flipped Asynchronous and Flipped Discussion Models
One of the most difficult questions to answer is, ""why are we learning this?"" The reason for this question is that teachers have always determined the specifics of the course curriculum, some going as far as creating a calendar to make sure everything is planned for each day, with little to no input from the learner.
Why not let learners determine what they learn, and in what order? Why not let them determine whether or not they as a class have mastered the material? Why not let them determine the types of assessments used? This session will focus on varying levels of ownership that learners can take on to ensure that they are engaged in a curriculum that they helped to create. Concepts such as ""overview days"" will shape a classroom where facilitators can truly facilitate, allowing learners to construct peer evaluations that hold themselves accountable to their own standards.

Bringing A New "Voice" To Libraries & Schools Through Makerspaces

There are so many ways that libraries and schools are being redesigned and changing.  One way is by the addition of Makerspaces which are adding new places for creativity, collaboration, and connections.  When Shannon McClintock Miller and her students added a Makerspace and tools like a Makerbot 3D printer, LittleBits, knitting, and “Maker Lunches”  to the library, little did they know what it would bring to the entire school community.  Through classroom PBL projects, individual passions, and global connections, the students at Van Meter have been inspired to make a difference within their Makerspace, school and the world.

Mindfulness in the Classroom: Increase the 'Wow!' by Staying in the Now
During the 2013-2014 school year, Upper School and Middle School teaching colleagues at Zurich International School joined together in a groundbreaking program that focused on actively bringing Mindfulness techniques into the classroom. The course was led by Philippe Goldin, a research scientist in the Department of Psychology at Stanford University.
Mindfulness has powerful effects in any classroom, and serves to break down many barriers, allowing students to ""own their writing"" and take pride in celebrating their authentic voices, without fear or anxiety. They become more in-tune with their own senses, able to connect to the environment, describe their own feelings and emotions, and relate to others' experiences on a global scale.
Through incorporating Mindfulness exercises and writing strategies into class time with students, teachers can boost confidence and trust in a community of empathetic learners. Mindfulness involves being fully present, in the ""now"" moment, able to connect to the external world, while quieting the internal chatter that can stymie a learner's development and sense of freedom.
This hands-on session will focus on the many ways to incorporate Mindfulness into teaching practices, both in and out of the classroom. We will share active in-class techniques that apply Mindfulness to the practice of engaging students as empowered writers, learners, and global citizens.

Beyond Googling: Building the Conditions for Structured Inquiry

Over the journey that has been Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia, they have become really deeply aware of how inquiry is a process. Similarly, Chesterfield County, Virginia has scaled inquiry-based blended learning to 60,000 students. The five core values of Inquiry, Research, Collaboration, Presentation and Reflection are at the heart of the inquiry process and everything they do as a school, but there are some differences with the way SLA approaches instruction at the individual school level and how teachers in a large, managed instruction district approach instruction.  At  the center of any great the inquiry process is that the person engaging in the inquiry, the learner, who actually cares about the questions they are asking. Building Literary Social Lives - Book Clubs, Book Reviews, and More

Everyone who teaches children to read faces the conundrum that although the act of reading is often a solitary mental activity, students learn to comprehend deeply when they engage in constructivist, social learning. In this session, I’ll share a wide range of tools, apps, and strategies I’ve used with my third graders to infuse our reading workshop with the power of social communication and to assess my students’ reading development.

From close eReading using Subtext to online book recommendations using Biblionasium, I’ll share actual examples of student work and videos of how we use these tools in my classroom. I’ll even share the anecdotal results of this May’s classroom experiment when we pack away all of the books and print materials in my classroom and try a solid month with only eReading and digital texts available to the students. Making it more than just a video

Tools such as embedded quizzes, discussions, polls, and annotations can be useful in creating a more interactive experience for students watching instructional videos and allow teachers to personalize their own videos or videos they have found on youtube. In this session, Stacey will share a variety of tools allowing teachers to incorporate interactive elements into instructional videos. She will share how she uses results from embedded quizzes, as well as statistics on viewer engagement, to inform what is done in the classroom. Models and Probes: Preparing for NGSS
The Innovative Technology in Science Inquiry (ITSI) project prepares diverse students for careers in innovative technologies by engaging them in exciting, inquiry-based science projects that use computational models and real-time data acquisition. ITSI has produced dozens of activities in elementary, middle and high school science using a range of commercial sensors as well as open source or research-based models.

Teachers can customize ITSI science inquiry activities easily to fit their classrooms and engage their local communities using the web-based interface. All activities are embedded in software that allows students to read the activity, answer questions, make predictions and collect data, analyze results, run a computer-based model, take and annotate snapshots of that model, and save their work within one application. It also allows the collection of formative and summative assessment data, which is available to the teachers.
This workshop will allow you to try out the activities and see how they would fit in your school. Project materials are free and available online.

Make du Jour: Fostering Daily Creativity and a Personalized Learning Strategy with Choice and Voice
Sir Ken Robinson claims that “creativity is as important as literacy”. In an age when most information is “Googleable” how do we craft assessment tasks that allow our students to practice divergent and critical thinking? How can we give them opportunities to both demonstrate their learning and their ability to apply and create knowledge, fostering the shift from consumption to production? More importantly, how do we move beyond the “assignment” stage and encourage students to be intrinsically motivated to make beautiful things on a regular basis? One of the greatest challenges is developing ideas, finding time, and offering opportunities for students work on creative projects. Even if you don’t have the luxury of  offering a project-based curriculum, you can still develop a steady diet of ongoing, “back-burner” projects that gets students to “dare to make and share”. This workshop will explore ways to instill a creative culture in your classroom, with everything from low-entry point crowdsourced uses of social media to the #showyourwork movement which asks students to be overt about their design thinking, creative process, and troubleshooting and contribute to collective knowledge. At the heart of personalized learning is creative freedom, but students often need a spark of inspiration, a design brief, or mentorship to get them on the road to making. Finally, we’ll look at teacher-as-creator as well, and the importance of transparency and curation in facilitating creativity in the classroom. “There is no win, there is no fail, there is only make” (John Cage).

Dynamic Digital Portfolios
Our students in Grade 3 have created amazing digital portfolios that allow them to reflect on their work and receive feedback from parents, peers and teachers. These portfolios combine work
completed on both iPads and computers, and store all selected information (photos, video clips, projects , photos of handwritten work in one place. We use Voicethread to create a seamless digital
portfolio experience whether the student work is created in Pixie, Keynote, Kidspiration, Share, PuppetPals, Storykit etc. with the recording option enabling students to explain their thinking quickly and in more detail. The basic principles and ideas shared can be applied when creating digital portfolios using other software or apps, for example Share (Tech4Learning) and Google Sites.

Learner-Driven Curriculum - Flipped Asynchronous and Flipped Discussion Models
One of the most difficult questions to answer is, ""why are we learning this?"" The reason for this question is that teachers have always determined the specifics of the course curriculum, some going as far as creating a calendar to make sure everything is planned for each day, with little to no input from the learner.
Why not let learners determine what they learn, and in what order? Why not let them determine whether or not they as a class have mastered the material? Why not let them determine the types of assessments used? This session will focus on varying levels of ownership that learners can take on to ensure that they are engaged in a curriculum that they helped to create. Concepts such as ""overview days"" will shape a classroom where facilitators can truly facilitate, allowing learners to construct peer evaluations that hold themselves accountable to their own standards.

Problem-Based Authentic Learning: Real, Meaningful Instruction Connected to Standard
Providing students with the opportunities to be involved in all stages of a district or school 1:1 plan and implementation allows for high levels of ownership and engagement. Community Consolidated School District 21 in Wheeling, Illinois included students in all stages of the process of identifying which device would best serve the District’s needs--from having students, first, select a platform to then meet with experts, decide on a device, outline their rationale for the staff committee simultaneously working on the same project, and then presenting alongside staff members to the Board of Education. Following the decision to proceed with the purchase of Chromebooks, students have continued to maintain ownership for the process by participating in other projects, including identifying locations in the community that provide free access to the Internet and creating policies and guidelines for other students.

Sensing Science: Temperature Readiness for K-2
Children learn by exploring their world through everyday activities and developing intuitive understandings. Testing representations using data collection helps us learn about temperature preconceptions. Concepts involving temperature and heat are among the phenomena children experience most frequently, yet they are all but ignored in early elementary education because of their abstract and invisible nature. Sensing Science uses existing surface temperature sensors and infrared devices in conjunction with a computer, enabling K-2 students to interact with their assumptions, record and replay their actions and reflect on their archived data. Using sensors, models, drawings, and other representations make it possible for children to explore their world, investigating the widest possible range of scenarios throughout the classroom, on the playground and elsewhere. We closely observed students' actions and actively elicited spontaneous ideas in order to test and revise assumptions about common preconceptions regarding temperature and heat. Based these preconceptions we designed visualizations and explorations. As part of a National Science Foundation grant, initial design tests took place in Littleton Public Schools (MA) during the first year. The materials were tested with two classrooms in each grade K-2 during the first year.

Digital citizenship is a critical skill set in today’s technology rich and globally connected society. A growing number of schools allow students to bring their own mobile devices but often fail to acknowledge the digital disconnect between students and teachers.

Technology and digital media allow students to explore, develop their global IQ, collaborate, and learn in ways never before imagined. This can only materialize, however, with the appropriate teaching practices, and when both students and teachers exercise responsible, safe and ethical behavior.

Students misuse technology due to boredom, curiosity and peer pressure. Participants in this session will become familiar with apps students commonly use to consume content, create content, connect with other people, and play. While some apps may have instructional value, educators should be vigilant about many others.

Designing Online Learning

The proliferation of inexpensive or free “easy-to-use” online tools provide increased access for educators to develop online and blended courses and activities for students or other educators. Yet effective design for the online environment involves more than uploading content in an available online shell and educators have many questions as they get involved with designing online content. What’s different about online design? How do we adapt face-to-face content for effective delivery in an online or blended environment? How do we design online content so that it’s interactive and engaging? How is learning in the online environment assessed?  How do we keep the focus on the pedagogy and content and not the technology tools? 

This hands-on interactive session will address these questions and more through a discussion of key online course design principles, an exploration of an online course used to prepare educators to design their own online courses, and a review variety of example online courses and activities that illustrate effective online design.

Thinking Hyperbolically! A Math/Art+Design Mashup

The session will showcase ideas gleaned from “Thinking Hyperbolically!” – a math/art+design hybrid course offered as an elective subject for high school students (typically in year 9 and 10). The primary focus of this course was to establish powerful links to interdisciplinary learning through minimal reliance on student “creative” or “mathematical” ability.  TH! has promoted experience over stereotype and has provided an exciting template for innovative models of cross-curricula learning related to mathematics, design and art, incorporating applied practical experiences for students including the use of contemporary digital technologies. Each unit of work produced aesthetic form (physical and virtual) from underlying mathematical theory. TH! and its peripheral studies has influenced the education experience for both students and teachers, providing that “curiously sharp sense of joy” May (1975), inherent in the surprising mashup of disparate themes. We believe the cross-fertilisation of ideas enriches best practice. TH! projects detail how innovative practice is constantly evolving. Sharing ideas and promoting action related to interdisciplinary models of learning will enhance the breadth of development in critical thinking and the scope of potential creative output for all.

Dynamic Digital Portfolios
Our students in Grade 3 have created amazing digital portfolios that allow them to reflect on their work and receive feedback from parents, peers and teachers. These portfolios combine work
completed on both iPads and computers, and store all selected information (photos, video clips, projects , photos of handwritten work in one place. We use Voicethread to create a seamless digital
portfolio experience whether the student work is created in Pixie, Keynote, Kidspiration, Share, PuppetPals, Storykit etc. with the recording option enabling students to explain their thinking quickly and in more detail. The basic principles and ideas shared can be applied when creating digital portfolios using other software or apps, for example Share (Tech4Learning) and Google Sites.

Being Smart with Graphs
SmartGraphs is a project that studies the educational value of digital objects embedded in graphs that “know” about themselves and that provide scaffolding to students to help them learn about graphs and the concepts conveyed in graphs.

Digital SmartGraphs can be authored or customized by teachers and accept inputs from students’ responses, sketches, functions, models, and probes. The software analyzes the graphs for the kinds of features that experts recognize and then engages students in conversations that instruct and assess student knowledge.

SmartGraphs is guided by collaboration between the Concord Consortium and the Pennsylvania State Department of Education Classrooms for the Future program, through which 145,000 laptop computers are deployed to serve 500,000 students. Other states, districts, or schools that are also interested in providing meaningful software to help students interpret visual graphical data from existing graphs or real time data collected with probes will thrill with this free Open Source software tool!

While learning management systems like Moodle and Blackboard are still popular choices for facilitating online and augmented courses, these systems are being challenged by 'small-tools-loosely-joined' approaches to instructional design. 1:1 Devices: For Students, with Students, By Students
Providing students with the opportunities to be involved in all stages of a district or school 1:1 plan and implementation allows for high levels of ownership and engagement. Community Consolidated School District 21 in Wheeling, Illinois included students in all stages of the process of identifying which device would best serve the District’s needs--from having students, first, select a platform to then meet with experts, decide on a device, outline their rationale for the staff committee simultaneously working on the same project, and then presenting alongside staff members to the Board of Education. Following the decision to proceed with the purchase of Chromebooks, students have continued to maintain ownership for the process by participating in other projects, including identifying locations in the community that provide free access to the Internet and creating policies and guidelines for other students.

Do You Know What Kids Are Doing With Their Smartphones When You Are Not Watching?
Digital citizenship is a critical skill set in today’s technology rich and globally connected society. A growing number of schools allow students to bring their own mobile devices but often fail to acknowledge the digital disconnect between students and teachers.

Technology and digital media allow students to explore, develop their global IQ, collaborate, and learn in ways never before imagined. This can only materialize, however, with the appropriate teaching practices, and when both students and teachers exercise responsible, safe and ethical behavior.

Students misuse technology due to boredom, curiosity and peer pressure. Participants in this session will become familiar with apps students commonly use to consume content, create content, connect with other people, and play. While some apps may have instructional value, educators should be vigilant about many others.

Transforming class culture to make things personal using the flipped classroom model.

With the increasing demand to make courses more rigorous and cover more material, it can be challenging to find the time to check in with each student in your classroom on a daily basis. How do you ensure that you are able to address each of your student's questions, concerns and comprehension? How will you have enough time to connect with each and every one of your students on a personal level? Stacey will explain how the flipped model can be used to create a participatory learning environment. Through pre-recording lessons and sending the teacher-driven lecture home, students can regain a voice in the classroom. Interactive elements, such as embedded quizzes, can help give the teacher a snapshot of individual learners' needs and customize one-on-one and small group conversations.
